Tour of Sperrins attracts big entry
More than 80 drivers from both the MSA Northern Ireland Rally Championship and Valvoline Irish Forestry Championship will go head-to-head on this weekend’s Mcgeehan Motorsport Tour of the Sperrins Rally.
The need to switch from Tarmac to gravel for the first time in a decade has not deterred competitors, who will tackle a total of eight special stages through the Glenshane, Banagher and Davagh forest complexes.
Top seed Desi Henry (Skoda Fabia R5) heads to the rally confident of making it consecutive Forestry victories following his start-to-finish triumph on the previous round, the Moonraker Rally.
Derek Mcgarrity harbours a similar ambition, albeit in the Northern Ireland Championship. He currently heads the points standings in his Ford Fiesta WRC thanks to his success on last month’s Circuit of Ireland.
Other drivers likely to challenge for honours include Kenny Mckinstry, Derek Mcgeehan, Brendan Cumiskey and BRC exponent Marty Mccormack.
