Moroney robbed as Jasper emerges on top
Organisers: Greenbelt MC, Wickford AC, Middlesex County AC When: May 1 Where: Woodbridge, Suffolk Championships: Jelfmotorsport.com AEMC/ASEMC Starters: 45 Stages: 8
Tyre woes robbed Niall Moroney and Elgan Davies’s ex-colin Mcrae Subaru Impreza WRC of victory and handed the spoils to Mark Jasper and Don Whyatt’s Ford Escort on the Middlewick Stages in Suffolk.
Jasper and Moroney tied on the opening stage before the Impreza driver consolidated his lead. But he limped to the finish of stage six with a delaminated tyre and saw his lead become an 18-second deficit. Despite topping the times on all but one stage, Moroney was still 15 seconds down at the finish.
Tony Clements/mark Andrews’ Mitsubishi Lancer E9 also started well, losing an early third to Stephen Tilburn/marc Sheffield’s Ford Escort after they had a puncture on stage six. Steve Retchless/sasha Heriot retired their Escort from fifth on stage two, which moved Grant Shand/ Jez Rogers’ Escort up until they broke a front wheel.
Stuart and Simon Larbey’s Impreza was fourth after Clements’ demise, with the Escorts of Roland Brown/terry Luckings and Kevin Boyle/david Smalley completing the top six.
