Hamilton and Mercedes deny favouritism speculation amid Rosberg’s streak
Lewis Hamilton has urged Formula 1 fans to back Mercedes as a team after dismissing speculation the squad may be favouring Nico Rosberg this year.
While Rosberg has strolled to victory in each of the first four races of 2016, Hamilton’s side of the garage has suffered a host of technical issues, including two hybrid system failures in successive races.
Hamilton’s plight has brought with it a wave of conspiracy theories on social media about Mercedes potentially focusing more on Rosberg this year instead of the three-time champion.
Mercedes issued an open letter to fans last week saying: “We have the best guys and girls in the world, doing an awesome job, week in and week out – and they do it for the team. Not for one driver or the other but for each other. There is no ‘A’ or ‘B’ team here.”
Hamilton then issued his own statement, adding: “I want you to know how grateful I am for all the support. I’d like to ask that you please trust in my team, as I do. This is a family. These guys have been the greatest, hardest-working people for me, and that is why I am now a three-time world champion.
“Please don’t put any thought into my team doing anything unjust towards me, and understand that it would be in no one’s best interest for that to be the case.”
