Dowson Jr leaves it late
Organiser: Startrax Where: Belle Vue When: May 2 Starters: 34
John Dowson Jr snatched victory from Frankie Wainman Jr within sight of the finish line in a dramatic final at Belle Vue on Bank Holiday Monday. It was Dowson’s second final win in Manchester: he won the final at the Christmas meeting at the end of 2015 at the same venue.
At the drop of the green flag, James Clement spun his machine, triggering a multi-car pile-up that involved around 10 cars, including Wainman.
This let Mark Poole, Dave Wills and Dowson open up a huge lead over the chasing pack but Willis tangled with a lapped car and was eliminated. Soon after that, Dowson forged his way into the lead and looked to be heading for an easy victory until a yellow flag bunched the field, allowing Wainman to close onto the leader’s rear bumper.
At the restart, Wainman forced his way into the lead only for Dowson to barge his way back in front the following turn. A lap later it was Wainman’s turn to punt Dowson wide and regain first place. Heading down the back straight for the last time, Wainman’s inside rear tyre went flat, allowing Dowson to try a kamikaze attack.
The two cars bounced off the safety fence, Dowson somehow kept his car on line and headed for the flag while Wainman spun into the infield. The old master did manage to get his machine back on to the circuit though and recovered to finish sixth.
