In a brutal race Mat Newson crossed the line first to claim his fifth final win at Coventry.

Mark Poole rolled his machine in turn one on the initial start. The incident brought out the red flag and a complete restart was ordered. Austin Moore grabbed the lead and held top spot for several laps until he was overhauled by Dave Willis and Bradley Harrison.

Further back, the star grade drivers were involved in a battle; this allowed Willis and Harrison to open up a half-lap lead on the pack. Harrison nudged Willis wide to grab the lead just after the halfway point when the race was halted due to a fire in Nigel Harrhy’s car. On the restart Willis used his years of experience to capture the lead.

Harrison forced Willis wide and into the fence with just over five laps remaining, the impact caused steering damage to Willis’ machine but, although out of contention, he was able to limp home for 10th place.

As the laps wound down Newson closed the gap on the leader and took a race-winning lead with a handful of laps remaining.

“I didn’t get the luck in my heat when I should have won it, so I think I deserved some luck in the final,” said a delighted winner Newson. “The start of the final was hectic and there were cars going everywhere.

“On the last restart they put me in fifth place, to be honest I thought I was about 15th but I hadn’t realised so many cars had gone out of the race so soon.”

Harrison brought his car home in second. “I didn’t get the best of restarts at the end, but to get a top three at the Mecca of stock car racing is unbelievable,” he beamed. “I had a brilliant start at the beginning of the race and had a great battle with Willis. I kept telling myself to calm down and get into a rhythm.

“We were away, but the stoppage scuppered us. I felt confident in the car and it went where I wanted it to go.”
