Corsica to feature proper ‘Tour’ in 2016
This year’s Tour of Corsica will be just that, with the World Rally Championship crews competing on roads right around the island.
Sticking with its format of two long stages per day – repeated on Friday and Saturday – the event gets underway with a ceremonial start in Ajaccio on September 29.
The first competitive action is a 30-mile test between Acqua Doria and Albitreccia on Friday morning. An 18-miler follows before a tyre fitting zone in Porticcio. With no service permitted, the crews head back out for a repeat of the morning loop before a 100-mile road section to the overnight halt in Bastia.
Saturday includes 105 competitive miles across four stages (two loops of two split by service in Bastia) in the north-east of the island. The final day heads south from Bastia down the east coast for two stages and 40 miles of competition before the finish in Porto-vecchio.
Event director David Serieys said: “This year we’ve again decided to organise a Tour de Corse in the true meaning of the term. The route is 70 per cent revamped with 161km (100 miles) of new stages. Endurance will be the key word.”
