Mcgeehan steers Mini to Bank Holiday win
May Day Stages Rally
Organiser: Enniskillen Motor Club Ltd When: May 2 Where: St Angelo Airport, County Fermanagh Championship: Junior F1000 Rally Challenge Ireland Stages: 6 Starters: 101
Derek Mcgeehan and Laurence Smith won the May Day Stages Rally in their Mini Countryman WRC by 11.7s after a penalty hindered early leader, Damian Toner.
Kenny Mckinstry and friend Derek Crossan went fastest on SS1 over Mcgeehan, who caught a car, by 0.6s. Toner was just another 0.3s back in a Ford Escort Mk2 but, after the repeat, the two-wheel-drive contender was in front of the WRC crews by 0.8s. He found another 1.4s on the reformatted SS3.
Over the final three stages Mcgeehan held the lead, with a SS6 win to increase his margin over Mckinstry’s S14-specification Subaru Impreza by 3.2s.
Toner went on to win two-wheel drive and had the most stage wins (three) to finish 16s from the winner and 4.3s from Mckinstry – the 20s penalty for a chicane error proved costly.
F1000’s Josh and Tommy Mcerlean made it three wins this season by almost four and a half minutes in the Junior section.
