Retson edges ahead for Kames glory
ABR Travel Services Junior Rally
Organiser: East Ayrshire Car Club When: May 8 Where: Kames, Muirkirk Stages: 16 Starters: 13
Finlay Retson scored an assured 25-second victory in last Sunday’s ABR Travel Services Junior Rally at Kames, comfortably holding off the constantly sparring duo of Harry Chalmers and Ewan Tindall.
Driving his new VW Up, Chalmers tied with the Citroen C1 of Retson on the first stage, but after that Retson steadily pulled away by one-three seconds per stage, but never more than that.
Tindall was holding second place with two stages to go, but the organisers had come up with a new route at Kames, which incorporated the tightest of hairpins. Tindall struck the tyres first time round, costing him seven seconds to Chalmers. He then dropped another second at the same place on the final stage to lose out on the runner-up position by six seconds.
Josh Hislop scored fourth overall in his Peugeot 107 by two seconds from the Nissan Micra of Lewis Winder and, although both had difficulty at the hairpin, positions didn’t change.
In fact, the only driver who didn’t have trouble at the hairpin, executing two perfect handbrake turns each time, was ninthplaced Amy Mccubbin on her first rally.
