FLUX MAKES F3 RACE RETURN
National racing treasure drives classic March
Ian Flux returned to his racing roots at Silverstone to race an ex-nigel Mansell March 783 in the Classic Formula 3 Championship – and scored a podium on his return.
Flux, the renowned allrounder who recently celebrated his 60th birthday, was racing the car now owned by his old friend Sean Walker and recalled banging wheels with Mansell at Brands Hatch during a 1978 F3 race.
“I raced against this car in period,” said Flux. “Testing on Friday was the first time I’d driven it and it is spot on.”
Flux was fourth in the opening clash before improving to third place in the second race of the weekend.
Walker hopes to gain a Monaco entry for the car if the two-litre F3 cars are granted a race at the Grand Prix Historique. “If and when there is a race for these cars at Monaco, we’d like to be there,” said Walker. “Ian raced three times in the Monaco F3 race, starting in 1976.
“I sold my Osella sports-racing car at the Silverstone Classic auction last July and the March came up for sale a few lots later,” added Walker, who is a fan of the 1978 March single-seater design. “March lent Mansell this car early in 1978 and it was before the Unipart sponsorship.”
The car later spent some time in France before being owned and raced by sjulian Baldwin for 15 years. Then, Richard Dutton bought it and reprepared it for Monaco in 2014.
The car is being tended by Miles Griffith from Hi-tec Motorsport, the team that ran both Flux and Walker when they raced in Sports 2000.
