Former FF1600 frontrunner John Murphy had his first race in a rare 1972 Crossle 22F in the Derek Bell Trophy races at Silverstone last weekend.

The Liverpool racer, a multiple title winner in North West FF1600, spent more than a year restoring the ex-ken Fildes F2 car, which was first used in Formula Libre races.

It is thought to have been the first car to lap Aintree at more than 100mph.

“I bought it from France about 18 months ago,” said Murphy, who is racing it in Formula Atlantic trim. The car is one of only four 22Fs built.

The Silverstone races were a successful shakedown, with a third and a fourth in class, and more DBT races and European outings are planned.
