Fowden in fine form to triumph on Dale Stages
Organiser: Teifi Valley Motor Club When: May 22 Where: Dale Airfield, Wales Championships: Welsh National Tarmacadam; Welsh Historic; FMP Rally Challenge. Stages: 8 Starters: 68
Bob Fowden and co-driver Paul Wakely dominated the Dale Stages Rally in their Subaru Impreza WRC, winning by 1m06s from Robert and James Tout (Mitsubishi Lancer E10), with Wayne Evans/sion Jones (Ford Escort) third, 2m26s behind.
Overnight rain made the airfield tracks slippery, but Fowden stormed straight into a lead that he never lost. Despite receiving a one-minute penalty for a jumped start, he went on to set six out of eight fastest times.
Tout lay sixth early on, due to a slow stage one time. But he increased pace as the rally progressed and as the track dried out he overhauled the battle for the other podium places between several crews, including Phil Turner/simon Anthony and Sacha Kakad / Andy Davies (both Mitsubishi Evos). When they both retired on stages four and five respectively, Evans’s all-day consistent pace reaped rewards as he held off John Lewis / Paul Jones (Darrian) by 13s.
