Hyundai to debut new i20 R5 car on Ypres ERC event with Abbring
The Hyundai i20 R5 will run in public for the first time on the Ypres Rally later this month with Brit Seb Marshall co-driving for Kevin Abbring.
While the new car won’t be homologated, it will run under the ‘VIP car’ regulation – the same one which allowed M-sport’s Ford Fiesta R5 to go head-to-head with Peugeot’s 208 T16 R5 three years ago.
After close to 2,000 miles of testing, Hyundai’s Michel Nandan says the moment has come to pitch the car into a competitive arena for the first time. While the i20 won’t appear in the overall classification, times will be taken against the full gamut of R5 motors present at the European Rally Championship counter.
Nandan told MN: “It’s a good time to present the car and to do some more testing at the same time. Nothing is decided yet for the homologation: it could be August, it could be September. What we have to do now is check the car and make sure it’s reliable.
“We don’t have the chance to make many jokers for the homologation, so it’s important to be right [out of the box].”
