James Cullen is making his return to competition on this month’s Donegal National Rally in a 2.5-litre Vauxhall-powered Ford Escort built by Ryan Loughran.

This year’s three-day event marks the 25th anniversary of Cullen’s maiden victory on his home rally in a Ford Sierra Cosworth. He followed that up with further success in 1999 using a Subaru Impreza. “We’re at the point now where we’re definitely going to Donegal,” said Cullen, who said the initial idea was to come back in a replica Ford Sierra known as the ‘Pink Panther’. “Everyone of a certain age would remember the pink Sierra, we won our first rally in it, and the plan was to replicate that but we couldn’t actually find a Sierra that would do three stages!

“For everyone involved with this, it’s a trip down memory lane. It’s a very nostalgic thing. This is something I thought would never happen again.

“I’ve been out of the driving seat for 10 years, but it will be fantastic when the time comes and we head over the start ramp.”
