STRETCHING THE HORIZONS
Jon Baytos, Primus Racing USF2000, 1999
“The first race on an oval was at Phoenix. Dan was pretty cocky about wiping the Americans out, despite the fact we didn’t even test on an oval because of the lateness of the cars. It was all brand new to him.
“[The 1998 USF2000 champion for Primus] David Besnard, being the character he was, told Dan: ‘It’s only two corners, they just happen to be two 135mph corners…’
“Dan finished second, amazingly, but said that it was a hell of a lot harder than he thought it would be. Looking back, for him to come and say that it was difficult was really something.
“He would never, ever say that.”
