Rally Italy winner Thierry Neuville dedicated his Sardinian success to his mentor Philippe Bugalski – whose birthday it would have been on Sunday.

Two-time world rally winner Bugalski died four years ago, but Neuville says he will never forget how much help the Frenchman gave him when he was starting out in the sport.

“It’s fitting for me to take this victory on June 12, the day of Philippe’s birthday,” said the Belgian. “I owe him a lot. He invested a lot in me when I was just starting out. He got me into a C2 in France and then his team ran me in the JWRC in 2010.

“After that, it was Philippe who got me to test a Citroen World Rally Car for the first time and then got me work with the client programme at Citroen. He helped me a lot and believed in me. That’s why this win’s for him.”

Neuville also wanted to remember another big supporter of his, Kronos Racing’s Jean-pierre Mondron, who died last month.
