FIA launch investigation into fire crash
The FIA has launched an investigation into the decision-making process which left Ott Tanak crashing into a burning forest at last month’s Rally of Portugal.
The Estonian went off the road on the same corner that had claimed Hayden Paddon’s Hyundai just minutes earlier. Despite seeing Paddon’s car go up in flames, the organisers allowed the stage to keep running and only stopped it when Tanak landed in the middle of the forest fire. Other drivers reported similar moments at the same corner.
“We want to know what was happening and what the organiser’s thoughts are on this,” said Jarmo Mahonen the FIA rally director. “That’s why we have started the investigation. The organisers will make their report and we will consider that. It’s too early to say more.”
