Day two: 110.42 miles; 6 stages
Weather: Sunny rain later 14-30 celsius ■ Latvala closes the gap to leader Neuville to just 2.9s by the time the cars make it through the morning loop, but the Belgian’s confident for the afternoon and delivers on that confidence. He’s quickest on two of the three repeated tests to build his biggest lead of the rally 16.1s. ■ Ogier remains poised on the provisional podium’s bottom step. The Frenchman has, once again, swept the roads clean at the front of the field, but his best hopes of victory here lie in the hands of the two drivers ahead of him. The number one Polo encounters some rear suspension issues in the day’s last two stages, forcing an overnight damper change at the back of the number one car. ■ The Norwegian assault on third place is halted in the afternoon when both Mikkelsen and Ostberg retire. Ostberg’s fastest time on the first run through Monte Lerno closes the gap to his countryman to just 0.2s, but hitting a rock and breaking the driveshaft on SS13 put him out. Mikkelsen hit another rock one stage later, breaking the front-right suspension. ■ Sordo happily moved up to fourth place, driving sensibly but still missing the feeling to give him complete confidence. A late-in-the-day throttle problem doesn’t help either. ■ Henning Solberg rounds out the top six, with Camilli just 6.1s behind on Saturday night. ■ Abbring suffers a broken gearbox in the afternoon and loses more time.
