Kalle Rovanpera scores shock second on R5 debut
Kalle Rovanpera turned in an exceptional drive on his debut in a Skoda Fabia R5 – just missing out on a Rally Zemaitija win over Skoda factory star Pontus Tidemand.
Both were driving Fabias run by Toni Gardemeister’s TGS outfit on what was a wet round of the Lithuanian Championship. Despite the tricky conditions Rovanpera had the edge until he dropped time and the lead with a puncture.
“It was a great rally,” said the 15-year-old son of former WRC rally winner Harri Rovanpera. “We had good pace for the whole event and lost victory because of the puncture.”
It was a weekend to remember for Skoda Motorsport, with the Czech marque celebrating another Asia Pacific Rally Championship one-two for Gaurav Gill and Fabian Kremer, this time Rally Queensland in Australia.
On Saturday, Jan Kopecky took a third straight Czech Championship win on Rally Hustopece.
