Capito denies Volkswagen departure is set as Mclaren move rumoured for August
Jost Capito denied a date for his departure to Mclaren had been set – he won’t leave until Volkswagen’s fourth year of title domination looks safe.
There is speculation that Capito could be running the F1 team by the end of August, which is later than many thought would be the case when he signed in January.
Capito said: “Nothing has changed on this, I will go when we have a successor in place and when the championship is in a good condition.”
Capito then hinted that the August timeframe could work, adding: “The championship is now in good condition, but maybe in Rally Germany it could be in the good condition, we have to be in the position that we are unlikely to lose. And by that stage we should have the successor in place. We are getting closer to the successor, it’s closer than a short-list, but I can’t tell you if it’s somebody in the sport or in the Volkswagen.”
Rally Germany runs from August 18-21 and the team’s home WRC round would be a sensible place to make the handover.
