WTCC champion Lopez to race in Formula E
Reigning World Touring Car champion Jose Maria Lopez will switch to Formula E for the electric category’s 2016/17 season.
The Argentinian is on course to take a third WTCC title with Citroen this season but with the French manufacturer pulling out of the series at the end of the year he has decided to move to Formula E. He will partner Sam Bird at DS Virgin Racing and will continue his links with Citroen.
“This is a really exciting move for me and I’m looking forward to the challenge of Formula E with DS Virgin Racing,” he said.
“I am confident that we can achieve great things together next season.”
Lopez replaces Jean-eric Vergne who will move to the new Techeetah squad that has bought Team Aguri’s entry, and will race alongside Ma Qing Hua. Meanwhile, Stephane Sarrazin will continue with Venturi.
