Mcgirr im­presses on Welsh de­but as class bat­tles play out on the Nicky Grist

On their first rally in Wales, Irish vis­i­tors Shane Mcgirr/martin Mc­gar­rity ini­tially strug­gled with an en­gine that was down on power and the big cuts that could be taken com­pared with the nar­rower stages back home.

Once they adapted to the dif­fer­ent sur­round­ings, they lead the two-wheel-drive run­ners home in their Toy­ota Star­let, win­ning Class B12 and fin­ish­ing in a fine ninth over­all.

Just one place be­hind were lead­ing Sil­ver Star run­ners Gavin Ed­wards/caron Tomlinson, who as usual were in a bat­tle for class B11 hon­ours with fel­low Ford Es­cort crew Boyd Ker­shaw/bryan Hull. Ed­wards found the go­ing slip­pery early on, but with Ker­shaw suf­fer­ing a punc­ture and steer­ing prob­lems, he was able to take it easy over the lat­ter stages to take the win, while a faulty fuel pump ham­pered Ker­shaw fur­ther.

In the bat­tle for his­toric hon­ours, Terry Brown/den Gold­ing set off at a fair pace in their Es­cort RS1800, per­haps a lit­tle bit too quickly as they spun their car at a hair­pin on Mon­u­ment after fly­ing over the big jump. They set­tled down in
