Mcgirr impresses on Welsh debut as class battles play out on the Nicky Grist
On their first rally in Wales, Irish visitors Shane Mcgirr/martin Mcgarrity initially struggled with an engine that was down on power and the big cuts that could be taken compared with the narrower stages back home.
Once they adapted to the different surroundings, they lead the two-wheel-drive runners home in their Toyota Starlet, winning Class B12 and finishing in a fine ninth overall.
Just one place behind were leading Silver Star runners Gavin Edwards/caron Tomlinson, who as usual were in a battle for class B11 honours with fellow Ford Escort crew Boyd Kershaw/bryan Hull. Edwards found the going slippery early on, but with Kershaw suffering a puncture and steering problems, he was able to take it easy over the latter stages to take the win, while a faulty fuel pump hampered Kershaw further.
