WRITE TO US Motorsport News Haymarket Consumer Media, Bridge House, 69 London Road, Twickenham TW1 3SP Volkswagen is concerned which means fans should rejoice
There have already been some raised eyebrows about the proposed rules for the World Rally Championship for 2017 and beyond. They will deliver quicker cars with better aerodynamics and are likely to be even more of a test for the manufacturers and drivers.
If you put the nuts and bolts of the rule changes aside for a moment, the fact that Volkswagen is concerned that it might not be able to maintain its position as the fastest is surely a good thing for the championship. When manufacturers dominate any branch of the sport, it can dilute the wider interest – as has been seen in F1.
VW has already had its resolve tested this season, with six different winners from the last six rounds meaning that the German firm has a fight on its hands already. It is also incredible to note that Sebastien Ogier hasn’t stood on the top step of the WRC podium since February (please don’t mention running order...) Despite that, the Polo is still the fastest weapon out there. The question is: for how long? Matt James, Editor
