The chances of control tyre regulations returning to the World Rally Championship in the near future appear to have faded completely.

FIA rally director Jarmo Mahonen ruled it out for next season, but there is a complete lack of support for the concept among the manufacturers in the service park moving forward from there. Added to that, Michelin’s Jacques Morelli admitted the French company was close to signing a new agreement to continue as a WRC tyre supplier.

“We want it to stay as it is,” Morelli told MN. ”I don’t know when we sign the new contract, but soon. I think everybody prefers to have the competition and the story that brings.”

Citroen team principal Yves Matton added: “It’s not a good idea. The only interest there is to make money for the promoter. If the control tyre comes then we have one story less for the championship. I am against it.”
