Damian Cole takes another Epynt victory
Damian Cole and Craig Drew fought back from a first stage off and puncture to clinch victory in their Ford Fiesta WRC.
Andy Fraser/michael Calvert’s Darrian T9 V6 had led from the opening stage, with Adrian Spencer/mark Hewitt in second, despite almost taking a front wing off hitting a sheep.
John Stone/rob Fagg were out on the first stage after their Fiesta’s engine went, which left Bob Fowden/paul Wakely’s Impreza and Gareth Richards/ Ian Jones’ Darrian checking the mirrors for the inbound Cole.
He was up to third after two stages and second after three, only six seconds off Fraser’s lead. There was little Fraser could do to hold off Cole’s charge and the Fiesta driver was in front from the penultimate stage.
Fraser’s rally ended dramatically though, when having reached the end of the last stage his Darrian was engulfed in flames. Spencer therefore secured second from Fowden, with Richards, Robert Tout/dylan James’ Mitsubishi Lancer E10 and Sean Crowley/ Emma Jones’ Mitsubishi Colt EVO completing the top six.
Crowley also had a small engine bay fire and picked up a road penalty, but took sixth on the last stage after tying with Mark Jones/llion Williams’ BMW M3.
