LUCKY ESCAPE FOR HUNTER ABBOTT
Abbott relieved after car almost ends up in crowd
British Touring Car Championship racer Hunter Abbott says he thought his car was going to end up in the crowd after a horrific start line accident at Snetterton on Sunday.
The Power Maxed Racing Chevrolet Cruze man clipped cars that were already crashing ahead of him away from the line at the start of race three and launched his machine in to a barrel roll.
Abbott’s car rolled along the top of the barrier and smashed into a camera tower, flattening the 12ft structure and knocking the cameraman, Phil White, to the floor. White escaped serious injury.
“I didn’t know I had hit the TV position but I felt it rolling,” said Abbott. “When I felt it hit the barrier, I know the spectators aren’t very far away and I was really worried that I had gone over the barrier and I was going to end up in the crowd area. When it stopped and I realised I was on top of the barrier, I was so relieved.
“It is one thing for us, as drivers, to go out and take a risk but we shouldn’t be putting other people in that position. Maybe there should be some proper catch fencing there.”
