Lotus 98T Year: 1986
Renault had been a pioneer with turbocharging in F1, and it was at the forefront again with pneumatic valves. That allowed the V6 engine to run in excess of four bar of boost in the races and five and a half in qualifying, which pushed the output towards 900bhp – at the very top of the turbocharging zenith. Senna won in Spain and Monaco, and he and team-mate Johnny Dumfries helped the team to third in the constructors’ points. It was the last Lotus powered by a Renault engine, as the team switched to Honda for the following season.
