Kajetanowicz takes a step towards ERC title in Barum
Kajetan Kajetanowicz all-but sealed his second European Rally Championship title at last weekend’s Barum Rally – with two rounds remaining, the Polish driver leads by 76 points with only 78 on offer.
Kajetanowicz’s only rival for the title is Alexey Lukyanuk, but the Russian missed a golden opportunity to slash the points difference between the two in the Czech Republic when he hit a barrel on the final stage ( see report page 30). Kajetanowicz retired from day one with an engine problem aboard his Ford Fiesta R5, but returned to collect six vital points – and a 250th top-three stage time in the ERC – on day two.
Lukyanuk now needs to win Rally Liepaja in Latvia next month and Cyprus in October, with Kajetanowicz taking nothing from either event to win.
Kajetanowicz’s Lotos Rally Team has secured its second consecutive ERC title.
