he wheels so nearly came off Sam Tordoff ’s chal­lenge for a maiden Bri­tish Tour­ing Car Cham­pi­onship ti­tle at Rock­ing­ham, when the BMW man suf­fered a night­mare in qualifying.

Just 24 hours later as he held the sil­ver­ware aloft from the top step of the podium af­ter race two, all four wheels were firmly bolted back on.

Cham­pi­onship-chas­ing Gor­don Shed­den won the open­ing race for Honda and Aron Smith be­came the 12th dif­fer­ent win­ner of the year when he took his Team BKR VW CC to the spoils in the third.

But the plea­sure was all with Tordoff. Sure, he had leaked four of the valu­able nine-point buf­fer he had com­ing in to the meet­ing, but his ti­tle hopes were still firmly alive. What dif­fer­ence a day makes.
