Col­lard set on an­other qual­i­fy­ing mas­ter­class to boost F3 ti­tle hopes

With three races left to run, four driv­ers hold a math­e­mat­i­cal chance of claim­ing the BRDC Bri­tish F3 Cham­pi­onship crown at Don­ing­ton Park this week­end.

While Thomas Ran­dle and Toby Sow­ery are more than 50 points off the lead, the fight for the ti­tle is most likely a two-horse race be­tween leader Ricky Col­lard ( right) and Brazil­ian Matheus Leist.

De­spite a brace of wins for Col­lard at Snet­ter­ton last time out, with Dou­ble R driver Leist his clos­est chal­lenger on each of those race-win­ning oc­ca­sions, a 15-point gap is all that splits the pair with 95 on of­fer at Don­ing­ton. For MSA For­mula grad­u­ate Col­lard, who only found him­self with a drive in the se­ries af­ter Colton Herta va­cated Car­lin’s third seat to in­stead race in Euro­for­mula Open, qual­i­fy­ing has been an area of huge im­prove­ment in 2016 – and a new strength that he hopes can lead him to the ti­tle.

“I was quite a fiery driver last year [in MSA For­mula] and was al­ways com­ing through from the back of the grid. This year I’ve made it a bit eas­ier for my­self and I’ve started qual­i­fy­ing bet­ter,” he said.
