Moroney gets first win in ex-mcrae car
After his first overall rally victory in the 1997 ex-colin Mcrae Subaru Impreza WRC, Niall Moroney is aiming for a top 10 on next month’s Clare Stages.
Moroney – along with co-driver Elgan Davies – opened up an 11s lead on the Wethersfield Stages, despite using an old set of tyres. It came off the back of a second-place finish on the Middlewick Stages.
He said: “It was a good event, we weren’t expecting to be competing at the front. We’ll go out to Clare next but there’s some good drivers out there. I’d be happy with a top 10.”
Moroney retired from his only two previous events in the car; the Centenary and Clare Stages.
Despite some teething issues, Mark Jasper made a strong debut on the Wethersfield Stages in his Proton Satria Neo S2500 Millington, finishing in second place.
The former Hyundai Accent driver is targeting a return to the MSA Asphalt Championship next year.
“It’s better to find out about any teething problems at this stage,” said Jasper. “There’s some work to be done to iron out the glitches, but the Proton proved it is a wellbuilt car and I think it will be ideal for a crack at the 2017 national championship.”
