Carmichael’s Ulster spurs national hope
Alan Carmichael is prepared to commit to next season’s MSA Northern Ireland Rally Championship on the back of his Ulster Rally success.
Carmichael won the two-day Tarmac classic at the wheel of a Mini World Rally Car. Not even a time penalty for lateness to stage 11 – the result of taking a wrong turn – could deny the pair in changeable conditions Carmichael said he revelled in.
“I’ve won rallies before in a Group N car, like the Bishopscourt Stages, but never one on closed roads, so it was special to finally do it,” he said.
“I’m thinking of having another go at the Northern Ireland Championship. I finished in the top three overall two seasons ago but I think I could challenge for the title.
“It hasn’t been possible to do as many rallies this year owing to other commitments but I think next year could work. It is a real possibility.”
