Circuit racer-turned-rally driver Johnnie Mulholland made his first competitive appearance on gravel on last weekend’s Lakeland Stages Rally in Enniskillen.

The former Ginetta Junior Ireland driver had his second outing in the specially built Hyundai i20 that belongs to his dad, Ulster Rally sponsor John.

“Coming from track racing and going onto the gravel for my second ever rally was a steep learning curve,” he said.

Mulholland made his competitive debut in the car at last month’s Dog Leap Rally finishing 36th. He finished 53rd on this event.

The 18-year-old says he intends to pick and choose the events he enters with a championship the long-term objective.

“I would love to do the full Irish Tarmac Rally Championship, and maybe do a few more loose rallies across the water as well,” said Mulholland.

The Hyundai i20 is a one-off rally car that was specially built for BBC Top Gear for the closing round of the FIA World Championship. It has a 1600cc engine and a sequential gearbox.
