I agree with Matt James in Mo­tor­sport

News last week (Septem­ber 7). Once Jen­son But­ton has hung up his crash hel­met at the end of this sea­son, I think it would be a mis­take for him to re­turn to the grand prix cock­pit.

I also think it is un­wise for any driver to de­clare that they are go­ing to leave the sport be­fore the end of the sea­son. It is tempt­ing fate.

But­ton has done a lot for the sport, and has gained a huge num­ber of fans over the years he has been in F1. But it will prob­a­bly be the fairy­tale story of the But­ton and Brawn part­ner­ship in 2009 that took Jen­son to the world ti­tle. It is un­likely that grand prix rac­ing will ever see a chap­ter like that in its his­tory ever again.

That, alone, stands as a stun­ning epi­taph to But­ton, and he should leave it at that. Stephen Wa­ters Via email
