Barnicoat makes sportscar debut
British single-seater star Ben Barnicoat made his sportscar debut in the Nurburgring Blancpain GT Series event last weekend.
The 19-year-old raced a WRT Audi R8 LMS GT3 after a test alongside fellow European F3 racer Jake Dennis.
WRT boss Vincent Vosse said: “I had this vacancy and wanted to try some youngsters with an eye on the future. Both did an amazing job and were very quickly on the pace – it was a bit of a toss of a coin to decide between them.”
Barnicoat got the nod to partner Pierre Kaffer and Adrian de Leener because of his lack of sportscar experience compared to Dennis. The trio finished 29th after suffering a puncture mid-race when running 15th. “It was always going to be a tough task once the car picked up the puncture,” said Barnicoat. “I hope I’ll get another opportunity like this again.”
The race was won by the Grasser Lamborghini of Rolf Ineichen, Christian Engelhart and Mirko Bortolotti but the Garage 59 Mclaren crew of Rob Bell, Come Ledogar and Shane van Gisbergen took the title by a single point.
They only finished 30th, with Barnicoat keeping Ledogar behind him in the closing stages.
