Smith de­lighted with the po­ten­tial of his Kadett af­ter Isle of Man run

Rob Smith showed the po­ten­tial of the Opel Kadett in his­toric as­phalt rally trim with com­pet­i­tive stage times against the Ford Es­cort Mk2s on Rally Isle of Man.

With his own Ford Es­cort Mk2 await­ing body­work re­pair af­ter a roll on the Harry Flat­ters in late July, Smith bor­rowed the Kadett that his RSR His­toric En­gi­neer­ing is now pre­par­ing for owner Peter Smith.

Rob drove it for the first time on Thurs­day’s shake­down stage and ul­ti­mately re­tired with en­gine dra­mas, but not be­fore trad­ing times with the lead­ing Es­corts.

“I’m so chuffed that Peter said to go and use it,” said Smith. “It is about 20bhp down on the BDG Es­corts, but we’re here to en­joy our­selves and I love this rally,” he said be­fore the start. RSR is also pre­par­ing Peter Smith’s Opel As­cona for gravel rounds of the BHRC.
