Mahonen defends Meeke after Capito Finland outburst
FIA rally director Jarmo Mahonen has spoken out in defence of Britain’s Kris Meeke, following criticism of his dominant Rally Finland victory in July.
Then Volkswagen team principal Jost Capito said Meeke’s path to victory had been paved by his position further down the running order. Mahonen took issue with those comments.
“I’m a bit sorry for Kris,” he said. “We all could see in Finland, I really lift my hat to him. When he came to the finish in Ouninpohja, he was flying and you could hear Jari-matti’s [Latvala] backbone breaking.
“I don’t care if Kris had 900 horsepower, whatever the start position – he showed on that rally what kind of driver he is, with all respect. Everybody who understands this sport knows what it takes to win in Finland; I saw the adrenalin rush when he was trying to put the helmet away – it was like watching Markku Alen again!”
