COLE ONE STEP AWAY FROM MSA AS­PHALT TI­TLE

Damian Cole will win the MSA As­phalt Cham­pi­onship this week­end, if he can take max­i­mum points on one of his favourite events.

The five-time cham­pion heads to this Sun­day’s Pa­triot Stages on Caer­went Mil­i­tary Ranges with a 28-point lead over Subaru Impreza WRC driver Steve Simp­son, hav­ing al­ready won at the venue this year.

“We won the June event in the [Ford] Es­cort Mk2, I’ve won the Pa­triot Stages both years it’s been in the MSA As­phalt Cham­pi­onship,” said Welsh­man Cole. “It’s no good me beat­ing Steve Simp­son [main cham­pi­onship ri­val], if John Stone [Fi­esta S2500] wins the rally. I have to take max­i­mum points to take the cham­pi­onship ti­tle.”

Cole’s pace has in­creased in the sec­ond half of 2016 in his Ford Fi­esta RS WRC thanks to sus­pen­sion changes on the car, which was pre­vi­ously an M-sport test car driven by Ott Tanak.
