COLE ONE STEP AWAY FROM MSA ASPHALT TITLE
Damian Cole will win the MSA Asphalt Championship this weekend, if he can take maximum points on one of his favourite events.
The five-time champion heads to this Sunday’s Patriot Stages on Caerwent Military Ranges with a 28-point lead over Subaru Impreza WRC driver Steve Simpson, having already won at the venue this year.
“We won the June event in the [Ford] Escort Mk2, I’ve won the Patriot Stages both years it’s been in the MSA Asphalt Championship,” said Welshman Cole. “It’s no good me beating Steve Simpson [main championship rival], if John Stone [Fiesta S2500] wins the rally. I have to take maximum points to take the championship title.”
Cole’s pace has increased in the second half of 2016 in his Ford Fiesta RS WRC thanks to suspension changes on the car, which was previously an M-sport test car driven by Ott Tanak.
