Mcgarrity debuts R2 while dad aims for title
Michael Mcgarrity – son of multiple Northern Ireland champion Derek – will make his gravel debut on Saturday’s Bushwhacker Rally driving a Ford Fiesta R2.
“I’m not expecting great results for the first couple of rallies, but once I get some miles in the car I’ll be hoping to set competitive times,” said Mcgarrity. “If all goes well, and I make good progress in the car, we will make a decision about what we do then. I’ll maybe do the Northern Ireland Championship; it has a nice mix of events.”
● A top five finish will be enough to hand Derek Mcgarrity a record seventh Northern Ireland Rally Championship title on this weekend’s Bushwhacker Rally, his first visit into the forests this year. “A top five would secure the title but we’re capable of winning it,” said Mcgarrity. He will conduct a test before the event starts.
