Another Hansen claims the European trophy
Former British Junior Rallycross champion Kevin Hansen emulated his father Kenneth, the most successful rallycross driver ever, by securing the FIA European Rallycross Championship at the penultimate round in Spain.
Hansen won his fourth successive event in the fiveround series to put the title out of reach of Norwegian Tord Linnerud with the final round still to run in Latvia in two weeks’ time.
Outgoing champion Tommy Rustad finished second in the final after a mammoth effort from British team Albatec Racing, who worked through most of Saturday night to repair Rustad’s Peugeot 208 following a heavy roll in Q2.
Rustad’s pass on Linnerud for second position in the final was enough to land Hansen the crown.
“This is amazing. This is something I have been dreaming about for most of my life,” said Hansen. “The focus for this weekend was to try and win another one, to do the job we have done before. I had a bit of struggle in Q4 but then in the semi and final I had a great start and to win the race and the championship. Dad has won 14 times and it’s very cool to do it myself. I’m so, so happy and I’m looking forward to try and win five out of five races in Latvia.”
Jerome-grosset Janin, Peter Hedstrom and Fredrik Salsten completed the list of Euro RX Supercar finishers in the final.
