He was a cousin of Mike Spence “My father was a sponsor of Mike Spence and he was my cousin, so it started with him. I wasn’t allowed to go motor racing as I was considered far too precious by my father, which is difficult to believe. It was shocking when Mike was killed at Indianapolis in 1968.”

He was talked into historics “It was really Andrew Schryver, my wife’s cousin, who got me into racing. We were talking at a funeral and he said I should get into historic racing and that was 15 or 20 years ago. I also started a brewery 20 years ago on the Isle of Wight.”

He was a champion “I started with Historic Formula Ford, which is a super formula, and I consider it’s where I really belong. I then went to Classic Racing Cars and amazingly won the championship in 2007 with my Merlyn Mk9. It was mostly by sand-bagging and making sure I finished. It was certainly not a reflection of my talent.”

He moved to an F1 car “I’ve loved my racing and made lots of good friends. The Cooper T56/59 Grand Prix car I’ve raced this year has been two years of constant problems and I blew up three engines not realising that I had no oil pressure going around left-hand bends. Eventually the penny dropped and we got the oil system sorted. We still had an electrical fault, but we eventually re-wired the whole thing and now it goes like a train. The Alfa Romeo engine in it is delightful.”

He’s raced all over “Bill Hemming leant me his Elfin 300 at Philip Island. That was a fabulous car and what a pleasure to drive down there and to cap it all, he leant me another Elfin to do the support race for the Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne. I’ve been able to race at Imola, Nurburgring and Zandvoort and all these fantastic places where you can feel the ghosts of drivers past.”

He has now retired “This is my last season, which is a bit sad and Spa 10 days ago was my final race weekend. I’ve had a very good innings and I find driving long distances a pain now. We’re all exceptionally privileged to do what we do.”
