Paralympic champion Zanardi back in GTS
Former grand prix driver and CART champion Alex Zanardi will return to GT Racing next weekend, making his debut in BMW’S latest generation GT3 racer after his Paralympic success.
Zanardi, who had both of his legs amputated after a CART crash at the Lausitzring in 2001, will race a modified BMW M6 GT3 in the Italian GT championship round at Mugello, linking up with the ROAL Motorsport squad – with whom the Italian has a long-standing relationship.
His last GT outing was in the Spa 24 Hours in 2015, in which he raced a BMW Z4 – BMW’S previous GT3 model before introducing the M6 – for ROAL alongside DTM drivers Timo Glock and Bruno Spengler.
Zanardi, 49, took time out of racing after that to focus on his preparations for the Rio Paralympic games, and won two gold medals in the men’s H5 time trial and mixed team relay handcycling events as well as a road race silver last month to add to two gold and silver medals he won at the 2012 games in London.
