Par­a­lympic cham­pion Za­nardi back in GTS

For­mer grand prix driver and CART cham­pion Alex Za­nardi will re­turn to GT Rac­ing next week­end, mak­ing his de­but in BMW’S lat­est gen­er­a­tion GT3 racer af­ter his Par­a­lympic suc­cess.

Za­nardi, who had both of his legs am­pu­tated af­ter a CART crash at the Lausitzring in 2001, will race a mod­i­fied BMW M6 GT3 in the Ital­ian GT cham­pi­onship round at Mugello, link­ing up with the ROAL Mo­tor­sport squad – with whom the Ital­ian has a long-stand­ing re­la­tion­ship.

His last GT out­ing was in the Spa 24 Hours in 2015, in which he raced a BMW Z4 – BMW’S pre­vi­ous GT3 model be­fore in­tro­duc­ing the M6 – for ROAL along­side DTM driv­ers Timo Glock and Bruno Spen­gler.

Za­nardi, 49, took time out of rac­ing af­ter that to fo­cus on his prepa­ra­tions for the Rio Par­a­lympic games, and won two gold medals in the men’s H5 time trial and mixed team re­lay hand­cy­cling events as well as a road race sil­ver last month to add to two gold and sil­ver medals he won at the 2012 games in London.
