In his final season of racing ( see story, right) Rob Speak is looking to add his second BRISCA F1 National Shootout title to his two BRISCA F1 World and European titles.

He is going about it the right way. On Saturday night at Coventry, Speak chalked up his third consecutive shootout final win, which gives him the lead in the series by 26 points over Nigel Green.

Speak didn’t have it all his own way though. He failed to make it through to the final via his heat and had to rely on a second place finish in the consolation to secure his slot in the main event.

He produced a blistering drive to dominate the race. He said: “It’s only the second final win I have had at Coventry. Winning here means a lot.

“You can’t lose time as there are too many good drivers out there and they are difficult to catch. It’s good to score so many points as we are coming to the thick end of the points race.”

Speak’s evening t got better in the Grand National. Starting from a lap handicap, he powered his way through the 36-car field to come home in third place.

Green, who is better known for his results on Tarmac, kept up the pursuit of Speak by following him home in the final. “The shale car is showing some promise and seems to be coming together,” he reported.

Tom Harris, a multiple champion, completed the podium places.
