Ogier wins in some style
Frenchman impresses with his desire to succeed
You have to feel slightly sorry for Dani Sordo on Rally Spain last weekend. The Hyundai ace did just about everything that was required of him to land a dream result in front of his adoring countrymen, but there was one man he couldn’t stop.
Sebastien Ogier’s insistence that he battled for a rally win, which was more than enough for him to land another world title, is admirable. There would be no backing off for him. He wanted to sign off with a flourish and that is precisely what he did with a stunning charge to stand on top of the podium.
After his Volkswagen team-mate Andreas Mikkelsen crashed, there was a purpose in his speed too. It wasn’t just about his personal pride at wanting to land the crown with a win. He knew that the team needed the points from a victory to stay ahead in the manufacturers’ race too.
That marks another rarity in a racer: the ability to think about more than just himself. It is yet another mark of the quality of the man. Matt James, Editor (Twitter: @Mattjmnews)
