Henry to focus on British title charge
New Irish Forest Rally champion Desi Henry says the MSA British Rally Championship will be his sole priority next season after scoring two top-three finishes this season.
Henry scored a podium on the RSAC Scottish Rally in May and followed that up with third overall on the Nicky Grist Stages in July aboard his Skoda Fabia R5.
With that experience under his belt and some early set-up issues with the Czech machine ironed out, the Portglenone man feels he is in a strong position to win rallies next year.
“We tackled rounds of the British and the Irish championships this season but next year it’s all going to be about the British,” Henry said. “The car gave us a lot of problems for the first six months – we struggled to find a set-up I was happy with and that left us on the back foot.
“Given our recent performances and where we are with the car, I’m now much happier and next year I believe we can finish somewhere in the top three positions [on events]. On the second half of the British Championship I proved that I can be as quick as anyone else on both gravel and Tarmac. The speed is definitely there.
“With a better understanding of the championship and what it’s about I think we can do well. We’ve done all the rallies except for Ypres [the new-for-2017 round] but that’s OK.”
