Welsh series comes to a fit­ting cli­max

De­spite the Welsh Rally Cham­pi­onship be­ing de­cided in favour of Luke Fran­cis and John H Roberts on Septem­ber’s Wood­pecker Rally, the Wyedean Rally still de­cided a num­ber of class ti­tles and a show­down for the run­ner-up po­si­tion.

The fight for sec­ond went to Wug Ut­ting in his Subaru Im­preza, the pop­u­lar driver show­ing an im­pres­sive turn of speed in 2016. How­ever, he could only man­age 13th over­all on the event but has sealed the Group N ti­tle along with nav­i­ga­tor Bob Stokoe.

It was a day to re­mem­ber for An­drew Jones, who had al­ready sealed the Ju­nior ti­tle. In his four-door Ford Es­cort Mk2 built for road ral­lies, he took his first over­all podium in the cham­pi­onship. In do­ing so, he also wrapped up the two-wheel- drive cham­pi­onship, fin­ish­ing eighth over­all on the day.

Caron Tom­lin­son, who nav­i­gates for Gavin Ed­wards, sealed the equiv­a­lent cham­pi­onship for co-driv­ers.

The high­est fin­isher on the event was Shaun Gard­ner, who took third over­all, strug­gling with rusti­ness in one of his few 2016 out­ings. How­ever, he has won the last two events hav­ing tri­umphed on the Wood­pecker. Paul Davy – last year’s Group N cham­pion – took sec­ond place in sev­enth over­all with Roger Allan on the notes.
