Welsh series comes to a fitting climax
Despite the Welsh Rally Championship being decided in favour of Luke Francis and John H Roberts on September’s Woodpecker Rally, the Wyedean Rally still decided a number of class titles and a showdown for the runner-up position.
The fight for second went to Wug Utting in his Subaru Impreza, the popular driver showing an impressive turn of speed in 2016. However, he could only manage 13th overall on the event but has sealed the Group N title along with navigator Bob Stokoe.
It was a day to remember for Andrew Jones, who had already sealed the Junior title. In his four-door Ford Escort Mk2 built for road rallies, he took his first overall podium in the championship. In doing so, he also wrapped up the two-wheel- drive championship, finishing eighth overall on the day.
Caron Tomlinson, who navigates for Gavin Edwards, sealed the equivalent championship for co-drivers.
The highest finisher on the event was Shaun Gardner, who took third overall, struggling with rustiness in one of his few 2016 outings. However, he has won the last two events having triumphed on the Woodpecker. Paul Davy – last year’s Group N champion – took second place in seventh overall with Roger Allan on the notes.
