Wimbledon fight goes to Downing Street

Campaigner­s fighting plans to halt the demolition of Wimbledon Stadium are arranging to take their fight to the door of Downing Street in early December.

The various forms of short circuit oval racing have taken place continuous­ly at the stadium, since its first meeting in September 1962.

Current landlords Risk Capital/galliard Homes, purchased the site in 2005 with the intention of replacing the stadium with luxury housing. Those plans were thwarted by the local council, who rejected an applicatio­n for solely housing.
