Donagh Kelly considering BTRDA switch to gravel
Donagh Kelly is evaluating a switch to the BTRDA Rally Series after enjoying his first outing on gravel for two years.
The 2015 Irish Tarmac and National champion sampled a Ford Fiesta R5 for the first time on the Grizedale Stages last month, and was taken aback by the new machinery having competed in a Ford Focus WRC07 in his title-winning season last year.
The Irishman crashed out on stage three while leading the event against strong competition.
“The pace was good until we went off the road,” said Kelly. “It’s been a while since I’ve done a gravel event and the stages were pretty slippy there. We were having a good run through the long stage and half a dozen corners from the end we got caught out on a slippy corner. I was taken by it [the Fiesta]. It was such a nimble car and handles so well. It’s certainly got us thinking what we should be doing next year. I really enjoyed being back out on the gravel actually.
“There was certainly a discussion about the BTRDA, a year to learn it and then have a go. We’ll see. We’re certainly going to weigh up the options. I spend a lot of time in the UK most weeks anyway. I was very impressed with the car.”
