Giddings takes Gwynnespeed title with help from rival Robinson
James Giddings won the Gwynnespeed Rally Challenge championship last weekend, but not before a fellow competitor drove 100 miles to help repair his Citroen C2’s parts.
The Rockingham Stages was the last round of the championship, where double points were on offer.
Giddings suffered multiple mechanical issues, but fellow championship competitor Charlie Robinson – who wasn’t competing at Rockingham – helped to get the parts to repair Giddings’ car.
“Everything that could have went wrong, went wrong,” said Giddings. “We had electrical trouble, a problem with the fan, the oil filter housing came off, and then on Sunday the wheel bearing collapsed.”
Giddings’ co-driver Dan Johnson had already sealed the co-drivers’ crown while the driver used caution on Sunday just to finish and seal the honours.
Mat Wheeler won the event with a brilliant performance, and took second in the championship in the process. Ryan Gibson took second on the event and third in the championship.
