RALLY BRC star Duggan takes the Modified spoils
In the Modified category British Junior Rally champion Rob Duggan, on his home soil for the Killarney event, led from start to finish in a hired Escort Mk2.
Duggan observed throughout the rally that he felt he couldn’t get the power down, but obviously he got enough to set the pace. Jack Newman kept the pressure on the whole way through and was slightly faster of the two through stages two and three. This closed the gap to just 1.9s. However, the Newman Escort had some clutch and starter motor issues, and Duggan, who softened his Escort’s suspension a little in an effort to find grip, was able to just edge away.
Interestingly, some of the fastest times were posted by Gary Kiernan. His Escort incurred a puncture on the opening stage, which knocked him out of contention, but he flew through the next few stages and finished 10th. Third at the end was Kevin Eves in his Corolla, having been sixth for most of the day before turning in some quick times over the final stages. Eves relegated Damian Toner to fourth, Enda O’brien was fifth and the evergreen Phil Collins sixth, to make it five Escorts in the top six.
