Aussie ace Richards gets UK Sierra run
Jim Richards, Australia’s most successful touring car racer, will compete at the Silverstone Classic next July.
‘Gentleman’ Jim will race the Eggenberger-run Bastos Ford Sierra RS500, raced to victory in the 1989 Spa 24-hour race by Win Percy, Gianfranco Brancatelli and Bernd Schneider. They eventually won the race by eight laps when the leading BMW M3s faltered.
Richards will be a month short of his 70th birthday when he races the car now owned by New Zealander Peter Sturgeon. Kiwi Richards was a four-time Australian Touring Car champion and won the Bathurst 1000 seven times.
It is hoped that Brancatelli will take the car over for the Oulton Park Gold Cup.
